Cristian Mǎcelaru announcement featured on Musical America
Musical America wrote:
The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University is in the process of adding new orchestra and opera faculty, bringing Cristian Mǎcelaru, an alumnus, onboard as a distinguished visiting artist from fall 2025 to spring 2028, and Patrick Summers, artistic director of the Houston Grand Opera, as distinguished lecturer in opera. Mǎcelaru will work with recently appointed Distinguished Resident Director of Orchestras Miguel Harth-Bedoya in a variety of coaching and mentoring jobs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He’ll conduct the school orchestras next February. As a student, Mǎcelaru trained under Larry Rachleff, whom Harth-Bedoya succeeded. Rachleff passed away in 2022.
Macelaru’s CV is already rather crowded, with credits that include music director designate of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Orchestre National de France (which he recently led in the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Games), artistic director of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition, artistic director and principal conductor of the Interlochen World Youth Symphony Orchestra, music director and conductor of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and chief conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester through the close of 2024-25.
