March 2022 Artist Updates from Primo Artists
Randall Goosby, violin: Randall Goosby was awarded a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant in a live ceremony from NYC’s Greene Space on March 22. The broadcast of the ceremony is available on WQXR.org on April 14 at 9pm ET/2am +1 UK Time and April 16 at 7pm ET/12am +1 UK Time. On March 24-26, he performs Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 with the North Carolina Symphony and heads from there to Brazil for concerts on April 7-8 with Fabio Mechetti and the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais.
James Gaffigan, conductor: James Gaffigan opens a production of “Eugene Onegin” at the Metropolitan Opera on March 25 with a star-filled cast including Ailyn Pérez, Piotr Bezcała, Igor Golovatenko, Varduhi Abrahamyan and Ain Anger. The “Onegin” performances take place on March 25, March 29 and April 2, 7, 10 and 14. From April 2 to 16, Gaffigan leads a production of “Le Nozze di Figaro” with a cast that includes Ying Fang, Federica Lombardi, Sasha Cooke, Christian Van Horn and Gerald Finley.
Seong-Jin Cho, piano: Seong-Jin Cho took the music world by storm in a highly publicized step-in at Carnegie Hall on February 25 in his Vienna Philharmonic debut with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2. The broadcast of this historic concert can be heard at WQXR.org until March 31. He just finished a six-city North American recital tour and makes his New York Philharmonic subscription debut at Alice Tully Hall on March 24-26 and performs Bartók 3 with the Cincinnati Symphony on April 1-2.
Nicola Benedetti, violin: Nicola Benedetti has been named the Director Designate of the Edinburgh International Festival. In taking on the role, she will be both the first Scottish and the first female Festival Director in the festival’s history. On April 8, after a 6-week European tour with the Benedetti-Elschenbroich-Grynyuk Trio, Nicola performs Korngold Violin Concerto with BBC Symphony Orchestra in London.
Gemma New, conductor: Gemma New has been appointed Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Her title takes immediate effect with the start of the 2022 season and lasts for three years through the 2024 season. On April 1-2, New makes her debut with the WDR Sinfonieorchester at the Kölner Philharmonie, and on April 14-15, she makes her Paris debut with the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France.
