Valerie Coleman creates an inspiring new vocal work to a text by Philadelphia poet Sonia Sanchez. Angel Blue is set to headline this World Premiere concert with The Philadelphia Orchestra.

The program, which is set to be performed on February 3-5, 2022 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and later on February 8, 2022 at Carnegie Hall in NYC, will see the soprano and orchestra led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Angel Blue will perform Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” based on a poem by James Agee.

The program will then see the world premiere of Valerie Coleman’s “This Is Not a Small Voice,” commissioned by the orchestra. The new work is set to the words of Sonia Sanchez’s poem of the same name.

The orchestra will also give the world premiere of Matthew Aucoin’s Suite from his 2020 opera “Eurydice” and will also perform Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1.

The orchestra’s recent Deutsche Grammophon recording of this symphony (and her Symphony No. 3) is currently nominated for a GRAMMY award and a BBC Music Magazine Award.
